See, I actually know the etymology of the word "barbarian" because contrary to what's implied in this piece, I have studied, know, and value the history of the West and people like me are not, actually, going to lead to the collapse of Western society. https://twitter.com/the_real_JonCon/status/1012383080307396608 …

If Rod Dreher is afraid Africans aren't going to read or care deeply about classical civilization, I have bad news for him about the vast majority of people who have ever lived in contemporary Western society.

"The creation-through-migration of Christian Europe, humanity's greatest achievement, is [advances the slide] evidence that migration is bad."
-
Is Rod suggesting that pre-Christian Rome was better? Also does he think there was only one ethnicity in Europe prior to the late Roman Empire? I have so many questions
-
Like, I'm hardly an expert, but I think Romans of most periods would have considered a Persian or a North African less barbaric and strange than someone from Ireland or Lithuania. But hey, uh, Rod is the one who writes books about Dante!
-
This is correct. Persians and North Africans could speak Greek, so they were cool.
-
Also Rome dealt with multiple periods of mass migration. The difference is that by the 4th and 5th century, the Western Empire had lost the will and ability to actively integrate and settle migrants to their benefit because they spent the last century having constant civil wars.

lol yeah the gothic crisis is eerily prescient in that it started because the idiot leader of a declining hubristic superpower (valens) got swept up in contemptuously spiting his perceived inferiors and then promptly got his ass handed to him.
-
though for my money Valentinian getting so pissed off that his germanic inferiors weren't be nice enough to him that he promptly had a heart attack and died will always be the funniest roman emperor death.
