NB: I'm eager to see and observe what is hidden behind the scenes in order to document the brightness in the darkness, before the history leaves us. I'm a neurologist, neither an archeologist nor a historian. Osama S. M. Amin

  3. My previous tweet, yesterday, is incorrect with respect to the provenance of this lamassu. It is near the mosque of the prophet Jonah, not Khorsabad.

  5. Iraq is the only country in the whole World that imposes the death penalty for such crimes. The colonel was responsible for guarding and protecting the site. The directorate of antiquities did minor excavation work after the discovery of the lamassu by the shovel but reburied it

  8. Update: Iraqi men beheaded for beheading a lamassu. In the mid-1990s, a crane shovel (of the municipality) was doing routine maintenance work near the mosque of prophet Jonah, Mosul. It came across a large buried rock, which turned out to be a huge lamassu. A police officer...

I've heard that the person who was responsible for guarding the site (Khorsabad) was the mastermind of this looting and smuggling process. He was a colonel (or a lieutenant colonel, I'm not sure) in the police. He was arrested after this failed operation.

The stele reflects the existence of “Jehoash the Samarian” and provides strong evidence of the “deliverer” God sent to save Israel “from under the hands of the Arameans” found in 2 Kings 13:5.

This dais was found in the eastern end of the throne room (T1) at Fort Shalmaneser. The front and sides of the dais were carved in relief depicting various tributary scenes. The dais was completed around 846-845 BCE (and that would be the king's 13th year of reign).

The scene commemorates Shalmaneser's support of Marduk-zakir-sumi against his rebellious brother, Marduk-bel-usati and the ascent of Marduk-zaki-shumi to the throne. Its place on the dais reflects its importance as one of the great achievements of Shalmaneser III.
