Word that the U.S. News ranking will start a specialty ranking in my field, criminal law, makes me realize that I have no clue how I would rank schools in my specialty. Here's a thread on why.https://twitter.com/ProfRobAnderson/status/1213855876651593729 …

What schools have the best crim-related clinics, with the most spots available? I don't know that, either. What schools have the most course offerings related to crim taught by the most engaging in-class professors? Again, I don't know that.

And what I do know of other schools can be weak information. For example, some schools start "centers" or "programs" in particular fields. I can often remember if I have seen news of a school that has a "center" etc. in my field.

But it's usually hard to tell if a school having a "center" in the area means anything. A "center" could be a real thing with lots of people and events and resources. Or a school could put up a website and announce a "center," and poof!, they have a center.

I usually don't have the time or interest to figure out how much another school's "center" matters to its program, so I'm not sure how a school having one means anything. In short, If I ever get one of these US News ballots, I have no idea how I will rank schools. /end

Relevance to students should be "can this school place me in jobs in the region where I want to practice," and USNews' national rankings won't do that. The best schools for becoming a prosecutor in LA is going to look very different than the list for Chicago, NYC, Dallas, etc.
Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

And wouldn’t inaccurate rankings skew this metric anyway down the line, since a lot of the ladder-climbing in the legal field rests on signaling? As in it becomes self-referential based an inaccurate initial rating.

This would obviously help students sort where they’re most likely to get jobs, but not necessarily where would prepare them best (through experiential learning or whatever else)
