With 350 votes so far, and the results pretty even between the two options, let me say a bit on why I asked: I'm surprised that anyone would leave their DMs open to anyone. /1

Seems to me that public accounts that are too easy to contact are naturally going to draw in noise at best, and much worse at, well, worst. Twitter has 125 million daiiy users, so there will always be lots of people harassing, trolling, insulting, spamming, etc. is it's easy. /2

But everyone has different experiences, so I'm interested to learn that many people find it worth keeping DMs open for various reasons. Thanks for the feedback. /3

I'd *like* to receive from anyone. But
@Twitter doesn't give me the, uhh, "option" of excluding known white supremacists from my feed so... -
99.999% of the DMs I receive start with “Hello.” And end with... “Send me a picture and your Email.” Dogs, like me, don’t have Email, folks.

i got back and forth. sometimes for reasons I open the gates. Then I get tired of the random men and hate mongers so I close them for a while. rinse. Repeat.

The latter. The reason is because if the discussion will be personal, or perhaps more involved/sophisticated, you can do that with just that person. This way you better manage your traffic/contact IMO
