Lots for libraries and archives to think about here in terms of the outsourcing of technology work to consultants and its ultimate impacts on systems, institutional capacity, and workers… 🤔

We here loads about the benefits that libraries bring to the well-being of users/community and even library volunteers but what about the well-being of library workers, stressed and burnt-out due to the constant pressure and worry of cuts and closures 🤷‍♀️

One great way to innovate libraries is to pay librarians more

I left a precarious position for a faculty middle-management position, so I feel obligated to use my power (such as it is) to speak out against unsustainable hiring practices whenever relevant, even if just in passing. Spreading awareness of the issue, y'know?

Hi I plan on working in libraries for the foreseeable future and here’s what I envision for workers: -a workplace that strives to decrease stress and takes preventative measures against burnout -fair wages and steady employment -equitable and diverse staffing

Unionise. Learn how power works in your institution / jurisdiction & make good on that knowledge. Take every possible opportunity to improve your members' 1) bargaining skills 2) messaging/comms skills. In Canada, provides training opportunities.

I'm at a union org (yay unions!). We're starting to have conversations about establishing local policies about accepting interns, with attention to trying to pay them. Having conversations about intentionally shifting responsibilities to support users + each other.

. asks whether there are instances where unpaid practicums help to level the playing field. How do others think about this Q? Especially considering mounting counter evidence to the contrary… (📎 excerpt from: )

Not terribly popular but I have raised the question of whether we should end the mandatory practicum-as-a-class degree requirement bc it involves paying tuition to work 100+ hours for free. But most cannot yet imagine the MLIS w/o a practicum requirement tied to a credit course.

I raise the impact of student loan debt every chance I get. Previous generations have no idea the debt load new librarians are carrying and how it impacts everything.

The Labor Issues Task Force has reopened our survey in order to collect a broader set of responses. We'd especially love to hear from folks usually left out of these convos- looking at you all you rad non-academic archivists

Collecting evidence and filling grievances because those are some of the tools we have as a union.
