There's a restaurant in California that sells "Rhode Island" clam chowder and I was born, raised, and lived there for 22 years and have no idea how that differs from New England Clam Chowder, or Manhattan Clam... (eww), which said restaurant also had.

Yeah it’s gross, pretty sure it started in Newport for low fat Karens on vaca.
I'm pretty sure it started from someone not in Rhode Island trying to capture market share. :-P
