Complexity and its relationship to Depth is one of the things I see people misunderstand most often.

Complexity is the rules that you have to learn before you can play. Depth is the difficulty of the strategic decision-making, or the amount of skill you need to master a game.

Complexity can increase Depth, but not always. Tic-Tac-Toe has low complexity and depth, but consider a rule like this: “When you draw an ‘O’ directly below an ‘X’ in the left column, you must exclaim ‘UNO’” Added complexity, no additional depth.

I like games with a lot of Depth, but I want the minimum amount of Complexity. More complexity means it’s harder to learn. But games that are easy to learn and *still* have tons of depth?pic.twitter.com/G0koFYvJXu

I think one of my favorite examples is the Path of Exile skill tree. There are no small amount of people that find this more satisfying than, say, the D3 skill system. Lack of complexity was seen by many as “easy” and therefore less valuable to master.pic.twitter.com/Myfm7XCCAm
