Uh, which distributions did you check? Debian and Ubuntu make this equally easy.

Let me be specific with the actual task: I want to investigate/rebuild the kernels used for release ISOs, just with a slightly different config. For Ubuntu I had spent quite some time searching for the deb file from which I dematryoshkaed the config. Maybe I used bad keywords.
