      Why would it be that on one laptop I can connect to wifi fine, speed is normal, but connect on the other and it can barely keep the connection?

      Bad wifi adapter, laptops are pretty fragile and on the contrary to popular belief moving them around is pretty shit for them. Have you ever tried one of those wi-fi usb sticks? could perhaps solve the issue.
