Initial thought on this WCS Montreal issue: players badly need some form of representation. Tournament organizers fucking up like this when careers are at stake is not acceptable, but right now there's nobody reliably holding them to the standards they need to maintain.

That I fully agree on - there should be a mechanism allowing for WCS players (or maybe challenger players) to get reserved / high priority seeds. But I don't think the tournament organizers take 100% of the blame. 1/3

This is the baffling thing to me. How has nobody even entertained the (I'd say not so ridiculous) thought that the open bracket limit could be met?

Because iirc before these changes were made they, there were organisational problems with players signing up and not showing up after all. Making it more difficult to properly arrange groups and brackets at the tournament itself. 2/3

If the change was made to accommodate those issues, then they were fair and it'd be the team's / players task to make that 'bureaucratic' effort as you put it. 3/3

A change can be made for good reasons and still be really poorly implemented and thought through. This is the case here.
