This panel of a tiger devouring a calf lives at the Capitoline Museums. The piece is in opus sectile, an art form that pieces together delicately cut and polished pieces of marble to create an image. (Don’t tell anyone but I like it more than mosaic.)

This piece came from the Basilica of Junius Bassus, a 4th century AD civic building, the interior of which was completely covered in opus sectile decorations. Despite being transformed into a church, the entire site was destroyed in 1930 & only a few precious panels were saved.

I found this intriguing marble relief hidden in the Capitoline Museums. It depicts a priest of Cybele, a Phrygian goddess also known as the Magna Mater (Great Mother). Cybele’s high priests (Archigalli) were eunuchs and castrated THEMSELVES in a ceremony called the Day of Blood.

It’s the small details of the Ara Pacis (dedicated January 30, 9 BCE) - like this snake attacking chicks in a nest- that make it such a fascinating monument! has a video you should check out!

The arch was thoroughly obliterated. Here one of the few surviving fragments of the monumental inscriptions that no doubt adorned the monument.
