It is a Maya Angelou quote. It is supposed to read " when people show you who they are, believe them" perhaps I missed a part to it but that is the essence of that statement. Hope the heads up helps

I think yáll reading a lot into it. You are also assuming that most ¨mainstream¨ people are aware of the writings of black literary artists. Check the photos of most people who are legit confused.
