    yes. The threshold at which something is deemed an emergency/suddenly "worthy" of openness is impeding so much research into conditions that cause people ongoing, terrible pain (as just one example).

    As I've said before many times, "Every single time we decide to mandate immediate OA & to accelerate publishing due a disease/health crisis, we must pause and ask ourselves how we do not mandate it for all research." It's just heartbreaking and maddening to keep repeating this.

    2015: Immediate open access is critical for Ebola. 2016: For Zika 2019: For opioids 2020: for ... 2025: Let's stop this nonsense. It's critical for for HIV, cancer, malaria, and literally ALL RESEARCH.

    Thanks Emily. And we agree that author charges are emphatically NOT the way to sustain OA & share researchers' anger about exploitative publisher behaviour - this is why we're working so hard on and the creation of a community governed & owned publishing ecosystem.
