Rationalists tend to take any criticism as Romantic anti-rationalism: “But emotions! But poetry! And what about healing crystals!” Whereas, we tech people are often annoying when we try to apply specific rational methods in cases where they don’t work. https://twitter.com/smoofra/status/993598161267539968 …

I agree with that! Under the definition I’m using, rationality is not opposed to emotion though.
-
Label me playfully irrational today.
-
Happy to hear you are feeling that way! I am enjoying getting to do some focussed intellectual work today for the first time in seven months…
-
Glad to hear it! Please ignore my discordian interruptions.

I am also enjoying ranting on twitter :) and drinking a beer and doing yoga in the sun on the deck

Are our emotions not impacted by rationality, though? If someone critically addresses the reasons behind my anger, does that emotion not change *downstream* of rationality?
-
Sure, there is feedback. But even the choice to do something about the anger is an emotional one.
-
But the choice to become angry is informed by belief, and belief is created through rational processes (though they may be irrationally held). If you don't believe you even have a wife, you will never get mad if she cheats on you, after all.
-
Belief is an emotion about an idea.
-
This is a really interesting formulation—is it your own? Or, if not, do you know the source?
-
That just me.

I may borrow that! (with attribution)

Be my guest.
