My method: Do not refer the reader to your other stuff. Don't look over your old material while writing. Rewrite it totally fresh, and in a way that best serves the new material.

I think Wilber's solution would work; while a bit tedious for his committed readers, is best for all the new people coming to his material. Write the summary and refer them back to the original if they want more depth. I've come to appreciate I can refer people any of his books

That depends if the material is a major theme of the chapter or book. If so, you might want to rewrite the material and also make a reference to your earlier work (sell more books!). But if it's a minor theme, reduce it to a paragraph and refer to other work.
