Watching your breath or chanting a mantra internally are both attention developing activities, and as such, are helpful for those seeking to know themselves better.
Attention-building, yes, and also a powerful practice of emotional regulation, connection-building, and compassion. (Added pedantry, just because: chanting a mantra and singing kirtan are not exactly the same thing, either. As you both know.)
