To my Buddhist friends: can anybody show me in the Pali Canon where it said that Buddha or his followers ever ‘went on retreat’ as we typically do today?

e.g. at a ‘retreat centre’ or ashram? For days/weeks/months at a time?

That’s not how they did it. They were itinerant beggars, & so couldn’t. However, because the rainy season in India made travel impossible for three months a year, they were eventually allowed to stay put (in viharas) during the rains. This gave rise to retreats during the rains.

I favor them. Except that I think most meditators need to move their body more often during retreat.
