It seems purely random as to when and why such a hackneyed attack as a dictionary attack occurs. Prolly someone looking to use your server for other activities and they just hit many ips?
Since I published the last deconstructing yourself podcast, the website is been under continuous password attack. I’m protected from that, but it still interesting as a phenomenon.

They’re smart enough to scrape all the author names first, and use those as attempted logins.

They have a webcrawler I gather. That *is* a little more sophisticated than most admin admin attacks.
