I just like that in the original it’s specifically “Jupiter,” not “the gods.” (As for the phrase, I’ve always thought that it was an acknowledgment of the depth of suffering in mental illness.)

Ah that’s interesting! I always had the vague impression that it was a sort of warning to ‘keep an even keel’, which could be very cruel advice - but your interpretation makes much more sense, and is a much more compassionate reading. Thanks for humouring me.
