Being slow, subtle, and measured is rarely rewarded.

Yes, or just being simple, happy, and kind. Although, to be fair, these are all their own rewards, it still blows me away how our society only celebrates the most diseased/unbalanced minds.

this is super interesting. our attention is drawn to novelty. in a culture where ego drives us to be the center of attention, abnormality = novelty. so in some ways the culture drives a discontent with the everyday. hm.
-
we also have a fetish for the banal, i think; the combinations of these things yield some weird cultural outcomes eg reality television
-
I always found it interesting that reality television in its original form (Japan) very much celebrated the banal. But when translated to western audiences, it became a different animal, where "reality" is exaggerated and celebrities are created.
-
A typical “success” story goes: "I wrecked my family, body, mental health, friendships, was an asshole to everyone, took a steaming dump on the world, and now I’m a pinched miserable shell of a human, but it was worth it because I achieved X.” Cue the worshipful video collage.

Part of it is that we are fascinated by people who take things to an extreme that we would never approach in our (in some ways) smaller, safer lives. E.g. monk in cave 30 years, or dude doing 50 consecutive triathlons day after day in each state or whatever.
