Very roughly how many water molecules would you guess there are in a single cell? Within a couple of orders of magnitude? I got it quite wrong.
"A billion" was my first thought, too. So I guess it's just shorthand, or shortneuron, for REALLY BIG.

For some tribes anything over 2 is a "really big number". They count: "1, 2, many...." For the ancient Chinese 10,000 effectively infinity (despite having armies of millions!). Indians had unfeasibly large numbers, used only in religious texts...

In India people will actually use the number "crore" in a conversation. A crore being 100 lakhs, of course. :)

Yep. These days it is used a lot more than it used to be as Rupee multi-billionaires become common.
