I haven't thought it through, really. Just mainly noticing that some of those steps seem wrong or inverse to me. For example, I'd say that attitudes are more surface than beliefs. So "attitudes serve beliefs and beliefs serve identities" seems like a more logical order to me.

I've found in researching my new book that attitudes come first when people engage in motivated reasoning related to self and group identity. But, of course, beliefs marble the whole system - we believe we hold certain attitudes and so on.
