yes......... along with ethics!

Everybody wants the same exact thing: ease and security for them and theirs. The difference is in what constitutes ease and security. Ethics operates within that definition more than it determines it. Thus, it will be probably be difficult to change their worldview with ethics.
-
Actually there’s a third distinction which is what constitutes “us” versus “them” in their eyes.
-
Agreed, luckily philosophical development & spiritual development both work to expand the definition of 'us'.
-
Yes, expanding the definition of "we" to include all beings is the point.

Politics is inherently repugnant. It is a tar pit of delusion.
-
Yes, and yet we live with other beings in a world of interactions, and those interactions include politics, beliefs, behaviors, systems, power, control, and much more. And we have to navigate all that skillfully somehow.

I see spiritual progress on whole leading to more compassion & service; improving our overall ability to listen, collaborate & face our societal challenges more skillfully.

There's probably actually a technical question buried here. What emphasis will make them worse, what emphasis better? There seem to be types of insight that can, in certain circumstances, actually reduce sympathy and so on + make people fare more effective.

and, of course, some form of expanding Metta seems like a good idea in most such cases.

Funny. I've noticed advanced Buddhist meditators tend heavily towards liberal/centrist politics, whereas a lot of the other disciplines seem to trend towards extreme right/left. Probably purely anecdotal, but weirdly common in my sample.

Heck, I have voted for people whose politics I find deeply repugnant.

Most meditation practiced and taught "around here" is thought to often result in more vagal tone or parasympathetic activity in the practitioner. And, since vagal tone is associated with prosociality I say "go for it". Just make sure you don't end up dinging your own vagus.

Yes. You can't and shouldn't presume to know what's under the hood (so to speak).

If Aṅgulimāla, the killer of 1000 people deserved to learn meditation, why wouldn’t people who meerly think differently deserve? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aṅgulimāla

What are you defining as repugnant? I think we can all agree on the repugnancy of the far right. But what about the far left? What about marxists? Antifa? Where do teachers stand on the position of left wing totalitarians? The Buddhist community needs to address far left issue.
