My contention is that much of the benefits of meditation roll directly out of the increase in attentional acuity, rather than something we need learn by following doctrines.

OK. I def agree that attention is awesome and doctrines aren't. My contention (since we're having contentions today
) is that attention on its own can lead to real trouble. And that even increasing attention requires understanding how to work w/ emotional/mental blocks.2 replies 0 retweets 3 likes -
I’d like to contend here that just putting attention back to focus when blocks arise is the best way to deal with them, but I’m less than 100% sure of that.

Just doubling down on the concentration in some cases can cause all sorts of kundalini crackups, PTSD meltdowns, mental fractures, psychotic breaks, and so forth. An understanding and familiarity with 1) equanimity and 2) something like metta or "focus on positive" is required.
