Maybe you can get him to weigh in on the recent meditation and attention debate.
-
My contention is that much of the benefits of meditation roll directly out of the increase in attentional acuity, rather than something we need learn by following doctrines.
-
OK. I def agree that attention is awesome and doctrines aren't. My contention (since we're having contentions today
) is that attention on its own can lead to real trouble. And that even increasing attention requires understanding how to work w/ emotional/mental blocks. -
So what you are saying is that there is a potential hazard in using a simple mediation technique to develop attentional skill if it is not founded in some kind of moral scheme?
-
I'm more concerned with the idea that just concentration alone will do it. Like I posted in the "doubling down" tweet, more finesse is required to keep people happy and healthy. Just brute force attention can for many be too much.
-
I'm watching this debate and I think you are both pursuing different end goals? Jody seems to be erring on the side of no ego fixation and Michael on the side of dissolving ego-fixation but retaining a tether to developmental and moral play. Is this accurate?
-
Maybe. I'm really just wanting to point out that the instruction "just get as concentrated as possible" (which is not exactly what Jody is saying, but can easily be misconstrued as what he is saying) is somewhat misleading and also possibly dangerous.
-
My instruction would be to quietly and without judgement bring attention back to object, that this gesture is really what it is all about, and that there is no goal other than to continue this gesture in meditation for as long as you are alive. The benefits will fall from this.

and appropriately so. Thanks to both of you for the last one. I found the bit on the stages (especially the transition to stage 2, which I seem to be in) very useful.
