However, I’m quite proud of her for questioning the rule. I like rebellion against authority. Rules and laws are made for (wo)man and not the reverse. Many have pointed out the ridiculousness of wearing thick wigs and gowns in sweltering heat of the tropics.

Even the general ridiculousness of of relegating our attires below that of “formal” wear. We go dey use tie choke ourselves. But I digress. Where I am disappointed in the argument is in the religious angle it is taking.

That a Muslim woman happened to be the one that rebelled doesn’t mean the decision was anti Muslim or Hijab. You must shave your beards if you are in the Nigerian Army. Is our Army anti Sikh (shaving is against their religion).

To the NBA President showing his daughter wearing a Hijab in New York and others pointing out what’s happening in the US and co, would you support a child wearing jeans and T Shirt to school that has a School Uniform?

Of course one can argue my example is extreme compared to the little modification of the Hijab. How little is little? Who determines it? How shall we ensure consistency? Should the niqāb be ok too? Why not if you say no?

The way to ensure consistency is rules. Yeah. those same rules. And the way to ensure they work is by enforcing them. They way to change the rules is to rebel or protest against them.

So in this particular case, I’ll support the rebellion BECAUSE the wig and gown is ridiculous and this is an opportunity to reassess the dressing code in general for everyone.

When their law is in contravention of the constitutional which guarantees the right of religion, their law becomes a nullity to the extent of its contravention. The body of lawyers should be seen upholding the laws of the land and not their law
