Just watched “The Last Jedi”; got surprised by a ticket from a cousin and rushed off to the theatre straight after work. Goodness, that was a lengthy film. Now, while I won’t be posting any spoilers (I promise), I do want to share one thought I’ve had since the last film.

Many people have said, based on The Force Awakens, that Rey is a “Mary Sue” character due to the improbability of circumstances that have gotten her to where she is. My issue with this is largely that these circumstances are no less improbable than those Luke Skywalker faced.

There are plenty —believe me, *plenty*— of flaws and bad plot devices that I think people can identify in the new films. But the whole “Rey is a Mary Sue” argument honestly sounds increasingly sexist when it’s contrasted to the storylines that preceded it.

I agree. He you watched Star Trek: Discovery? That protagonist seems to hit significantly more Mary Sue markers than Rey.
