I really thought that in the 13+ years since what we now know as WoW Classic was released, 1) players would've grown up and become less shitty people and 2) the massive, tremendously profitable company that created it would've figured out how to prevent widespread toxicity. Several nights a week, they'd follow her, taunt her, kill turn-in NPCs, flag for PvP in hopes she'd inadvertently target them, then camp her corpse when she did. (They seemed adept at flagging just as she'd right-click on them to report them.)

She reported them to GMs on at least a couple of occassions. The first time, she got a response basically telling her that this was all part of the experience and she should find a way to fight back. She had to point out that it was an RP server and griefing is still griefing.

A couple of times she got a response that some action may or not may have been taken but they couldn't tell her what. (I still do not at all understand this policy.) But whether it was hours or days, these two players would eventually come back and resume their abuse.

Finally, in a conversation with her own guildies about what was going on, one of them noted that a Discord existed where the guild leaders across the server gathered to coordinate and communicate. She headed over, and the leader of the guild with abusive players was online.

The conversation went really well. The guild leader was apologetic and empathetic, assured her that this wasn't condoned behavior, that they'd take care of the problem, and to let them know if it ever occurred again.

The griefing stopped. Since then, she's seen those two players around, but they haven't messed with her. Most recently, she saw that they weren't even in their original guild anymore. For now, at least, they learned that their shitty actions have consequences.

This was a long dumb story but I'm sharing it to illustrate the opposite point to what I think a lot of folks in Blizzard might be inclined to make here: That WoW is great because look how wonderfully its community is able to police itself.

That, of course, is bullshit. My fiancee had several nights ruined because of WoW's inability to create a safe space for its kindest and most harmless players. It was then saved because enough people happen to care on her server that they created something outside the system.

Far more people have had far worse experiences in WoW over the years, be it in retail or classic. And yet, after all these years, it continues, and Blizzard itself is "unable" to solve the problem. It hides behind platitudes and excuses. It's a sad thing.

This is a really interesting story and perfectly illustrates some of the issues in-game. @Warcraft obviously values devs writers artists managers, everyone who goes into creating the game.

They need to realize that it doesn't stop there. Systems, people need to be in place to make sure that the game runs the way they want it to. The job of player interface, moderator, professional NPC needs to be created, valued, well paid, and lauded.

W odpowiedzi do @One_Rogue @Warcraft
There have been periods in the game's existence where it felt like they were starting to move in that direction. It's almost surreal to be that it never became a full commitment.
