I have been in both positions. Man/woman makes no difference. The seats on planes have been moved so close together that unless you can recline, the seat in front of you at full recline is so close to your face as to be claustrophobic. If you are tall, it will hit your knees. 1/2
If your in-front passenger's seat is in your face, politely explain the situation and ask that they don't recline fully. Or ask the flight attendant to ask them. Or ask to be re-seated. Both of these people were wrong. Being polite won't kill you. 3/3
