I have been in both positions. Man/woman makes no difference. The seats on planes have been moved so close together that unless you can recline, the seat in front of you at full recline is so close to your face as to be claustrophobic. If you are tall, it will hit your knees. 1/2
If you are in the seat in front of a seat that doesn't recline (back or in front of exit row), have the decency to only recline your seat at most halfway. Seats were designed before they were moved so close together. 2/2 now 3
If your in-front passenger's seat is in your face, politely explain the situation and ask that they don't recline fully. Or ask the flight attendant to ask them. Or ask to be re-seated. Both of these people were wrong. Being polite won't kill you. 3/3
