Sylvanas: my take 1. This is The War of the Thorns. There is huge symbolism in thorns. Thorns represent hardship, trials, a danger in your path. Sylvanas' thorns are memory, pain, loss.

When Thrall finds him in Outland he is an emotional wreck. Thrall gives him hope and purpose. But he comes into the Horde with a huge chip on his shoulder and a need to not only prove himself but also to get out from under the shadow of his superdad.
As is often the case with insecure people, he masks his insecurity with faux overconfidence and ego.
