Sylvanas: my take 1. This is The War of the Thorns. There is huge symbolism in thorns. Thorns represent hardship, trials, a danger in your path. Sylvanas' thorns are memory, pain, loss.

6. Both women have a powerful figure in their past who symbolizes their pain and loneliness. For Sylvanas it's Arthas. For Jaina it's Daelin Proudmoore. Both will need to make peace with these memories if they are to move on.

I've read Before the Storm and done the War of Thorns quests on both Horde and Alliance. One thing I thought in addition to your amazing take on it was - Sylvanas initial orders were to occupy the tree and kill Malf. Saurfang was left to fulfill that task -

He couldn't and Tyrande took Malf and used her gifted hearthstone to get out. Malf was supposed to be the crushing of hope symbol. Saurfang was at the start of the cutscene with Sylvanas so she knew at that point his death was not going to be the blow to hope she wanted -
