youve been away awhile. They now scan your account for inactive uses everytime you upload or users who never watch anymore. They will remove them as a subscriber. Sometimes that just means you see it as a negative sub other times they unsub the user.

happened long before I went inactive, one of the reasons I stopped, seeing all the work I'd put in bleed slowly away like this

Possibly that when you upload you remind people you are there - without reaching new audiences, all you have is an existing base who either remain subbed or unsub, showing a negative. Happens with a lot of things. Not unique to YouTube

I’ve in the past noticed a channel I was subbed to I wasn’t watching any more. After while I seeing video after video I just un subbed the next time one of their videos arrived in my feed. I suspect there is a lot of this when creators complain about uploading causing a loss.
