In Feb 1919 British-Irish sculptor Anne Acheson was awarded a CBE for her WWI invention: the plaster cast. Maria Martin worked on many illustrations for Audubon's famous catalogue of The Birds of America (1830s), and later books. She was the only woman to work on them. She was not paid - though he did name a woodpecker after her.
