    In Feb 1919 British-Irish sculptor Anne Acheson was awarded a CBE for her WWI invention: the plaster cast. With plaster of Paris used in sculpture, she created an anatomically correct papier-maché splint, reducing healing time for soldiers' broken limbs.

    On we remember Dr Janet Lane-Claypon, one of the founders of the field of epidemiology. In 1926 she published a ground-breaking report on breast cancer which was the first example of a "case-control study”; its findings still stand today.

    in 1938, Emma Tenayuca led a strike of 12,000 Hispanic workers in Texas pecan factories. “What started out as an organization for equal wages turned into a mass movement against starvation, for civil rights, for a minimum-wage law.”

    in 1996, three UK women (later four) were charged with £1.5m of damage to a Hawk jet, intended for sale to Indonesia. Their defence was the prevention of genocide in East Timor. The jury, shown a film of Hawk planes in action, found them not guilty.

    in 1961 Mabel Staupers' book, "No Time for Prejudice: A Story of the Integration of Negroes in Nursing in the US", was published. Born in Barbados, Staupers fought for integration of African-American nurses in the military & the US Nurses Association.

    Happy birthday, Raye Montague, born in 1935, an African-American engineer who revolutionized the way Navy vessels were computer-designed. When, during the Vietnam War, Nixon gave the US Navy 2 months to design a ship, she did it in 18 hours & 26 mins.

    in 2016, former child brides Loveness Mudzuru and Ruvimbo Tsopodzi won their case in the highest court in Zimbabwe - where over a third of girls were married by the age of 18 - declaring child marriage illegal and unconstitutional.
