It's only 3 months late, but I finally finished my jam entry! "A Geometric Intuition for Linear Discriminant Analysis". It's about seeing high dimensional data and is more fun than it sounds.

Ahhh so cool! Hack on a Super Mario Bros clone using just & your browser. Really fun tutorial.

I just remember taking coding classes, and it was always several weeks of "learn all this stuff, and then you'll get some console output". When I discovered Flash and and realized I could move things on screen and create worlds, that felt super empowering

This was a really fun workshop to run at that mirrors how I got started learning how to code: your very first line of code makes an immediate & significant impact (make Mario fly). It's awesome to see it's even easier to setup now since lets you import repos

I just learned that Mozilla Thimble shut down! Thank you for updating the "Hacking Super Mario" tutorial, super cool to see it's using now!

Anyway, hope you enjoyed a little bit of this behind-the-scenes of what I've been doing lately! If you have data you want to explore or present in a 3D map like this, check out the tutorial here:

I definitely spent way too long putting this together, but it was also fun to just look at butterflies. Look at this beauty! There was only one single reported sighting of this "Meadow argus" in 2017: Photo credit - JJ Harrison ()

Finally, we never ended up using this but I think this deserves to the see the light of day because just I love that collects this: All butterfly sightings across the city in 2017 (I added real images of each reported species from ):

I was also quite shocked when I highlighted just the highest and lowest counts - they're literally around the corner from each other! Does anyone know what's going on here? Does everyone just walk in the other direction when they're passing through Melbourne Central??

I haven't figured that out yet, but I wanted to know how the sensors worked. The good news is these aren't surveillance cameras, they're just infrared sensors. This page explains how they work: Here's a picture of one I found from a paper

Each sensor here is labelled with how many pedestrians it has counted since 2009. It's peculiar that this Bourke St sensor has counted exactly 0 persons in the last decade, especially being in a clearly busy area. Is the sensor broken? Did I screw up aggregating the data?

"Cesium Stories" lets you throw together different datasets on a 3D map and explore/share it. I wanted to see where these sensors were and what those neighborhoods look like. This was easy thanks to making this photogrammetry + sensor info publicly available:

I've been exploring a lot of 3D datasets lately for the launch of Stories. Did you know that @CityOMelbourne has "pedestrian sensors" all over the city? You can explore these in this demo story I put together for our tutorial:

I'm obviously very biased but holy shit Arabic typography and graphic design is fucking next level this is completely readable due to how elongated Arabic words work 😙👌😙👌😙👌

If this has piqued your interest, I recommend this 4D visualization primer () and also Flatland () and are great inspirations. Source code for the rotating 4D cube viz:

Also thanks to for his awesome youtube video explaining 4D projection (the last gif is inspired by one of your videos). This was made with which is awesome because I just threw in the cube and a light source and immediately got a wonderfully insightful demo

If you're interested in a video version of this, I walk through this in a little under 10 minutes in my talk here:

A bonus gif because the popular gifs of 4D cubes are always doing this animation where the cube is going inside-out of itself. There's nothing magical about this. Same thing happens to the shadow of a rotating 3D cube. It feels less magical because we know how to interpret it!

And that's it! Phew. This was definitely really hard to explain at a party while just waving my hands around and trying to make shadows at the wall. I hope you'll have better luck! 10/10

So now you know exactly what this popular diagram of a 4D cube represents (it's the shadow of a 4D cube, which is itself a 3D object). And you also know it has 8 sides (where each "side" is a 3D cube). Can you see where all the 8 sides are in this drawing? 9/10
