Scotland has been transformed in the last 50 years by the black gold pouring out the North Sea.
But as voters prepare to go to the polls next month are we witnessing the first ‘post-oil’ election?

So I think we can say that shooting down the balloon was never really an issue?

Here’s a video from my high school English teacher of the balloon being shot down over South Carolina. (Thanks to Mrs. Ellis for being a great teacher and for sending video of the live news!)

Looks likely but doubt it’s near the balloon’s elevation - the Combat Sent’s max is ~35,000 feet. The balloon is at ~66,000.
But as it’s sister planes can monitor Russian activity in Ukraine by circling the Black Sea it likely doesn’t need proximity… beyond sending a message
Quote Tweet
I filmed this plane flying near it briefly too — but also difficult tell actually how close the two were because of my distance on the ground. @KOMUnews

US appears to be tracking the balloon - and capturing any signals it sends - with a Combat Sent - very similar to the Rivet Joint planes the UK has flown near Ukraine to monitor Russian capabilities (and that the Russians ‘accidentally’ fired a missile near in October)

The US may not need to bring it down for national security reasons.
But we shouldn't rule out the fact that it might look really cool.

I don't really blame traders. Russia seems to love selling cheap oil.
But possible we're stumbling into a "cried wolf" situation here, given earlier threats didn't materialise.

The oil market is no longer buying the threat of Russian supply disruption (which arguably remains very real)
Diesel prices down >6% today - falling much faster than crude - despite only 4 days until EU sanctions/G7 price cap starts targeting Russian refined fuel exports

Darvel might be an amateur Scottish club but that last 5 minutes of game management genuinely one of the most professional I’ve ever seen. Held it in the corner for almost the entirety of injury time, punting it off hapless Aberdeen players
Cup giant killing at its best

5pm-6pm is the peak as people are getting home from school/work but offices, shops and factories etc. are still very much open, so you’d expect to see demand rise. It’s about the scale of the increase and whether that was successfully curbed to avoid undue pressure on the grid

Show this thread
During National Grid’s demand reduction run, from 5pm to 6pm, demand actually rose from 43.8GW to 44.8GW
But that doesn’t mean it was a failure IF (as I suspect) the increase would have been even larger without the measures taken

Russia made $168bn in energy sales last year, allowing Putin to laugh off the oil price cap.
But energy prices are falling and Urals crude is trading at a bigger discount, likely forcing Russia to tap its reserves or slash spending.
