How can we get local council planning/highways departments on board with this?

Hi Sam. The Bee Network is developed by the councils in partnership with TfGM, if people want their local councils to be more involved, they should get in contact with them directly. Many thanks.

I wish you'd been able to influence Great Ancoats Street developments. In five years time that's going to be the white elephant of Manchester, the smelly, noisy, motorised precinct that is going to embarrass the city.

They did influence the GAS developments https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/evidence_that_cycling_infrastruc … This email in particular shows someone from
@OfficialTfGM suggesting removal of cycle lanes at junctions along the route https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/612226/response/1509011/attach/5/email%2015%203%2016.pdf … - Još 5 drugih odgovora

There's a lot of work still to do here because across GM (almost?) all new housing schemes are the familiar and depressing car-centric type with no Bee Network standard cycle/walking access. Cars on pavements, assuming everyone will drive everywhere, etc.

A major step would be resolving the access issues created by GMP's "Secure by Design" guidelines. https://designforsecurity.org/ This philosophy is why modern estates have such incredibly poor access, with fences blocking homes from public rights of way. It is a recipe for obesity.

An example of modern estate design. Brand new estate right next to the Bridgewater Canal. The easiest path in the world to build. And yet... https://goo.gl/maps/M3pqganu6DjAUo3X8 … - you can see where people have torn the fence down to gain access. To get there legally is a 0.4 mile walk.

Trouble is people need to be able to get to places reliably & on time. The tram network is too small, there aren’t enough buses or trains & what services there are are too expensive & don’t run long or frequently enough. Cycling is literally risking your life.
