Offbeat China’s Tweets

The truth is while most people in China would support or at least not openly oppose protests of continued Civid lockdowns, most will NOT support and will openly oppose protests against gov rule.

“Serve the people” Another viral post today is a quote from Xi’s dad about listen to the people’s voice

fire has been many Chinese people's worst fear since the spring of 2020, that is, since many people's homes are forced into periodic quarantine with metal bars and barriers from the bus in Guizhou to the fire in Urumqi the worst thing you can imagine happened and will happen

Polygamy AND polyandry 🤣

Replying to @OffbeatChina
It should actually encourage polyandry as it has a surplus of men with no wives to make babies with..to not only help increase the population but keep the family lineage alive.... of course, this all depends on women, lots whom can barely tolerate the one husband they have..

Reading recent news makes me wonder which country will have the last laugh against Covid. All countries that’ve claimed victory failed/are failing again

Ever wonder why so many 1st generation Chinese immigrants are against the Democrats? This 👇

Why does CA DOE want to eliminate “gifted programs” for “high achieving students”? Here’s what they say: “In California in 2004-2014, 32% of Asian American students were in gifted programs, compared with 8% of White students, 4% of Black students, and 3% of Latinx students”

The more I’ve contemplated how we discuss China’s political typology the more I’m forced to conclude we have a huge missing gap in our understanding of how authoritarian systems can function and operate when the power base they draw from civil society is broad rather than narrow.

Here's the thing about allowing celebration of Chloe Zhao from perspective of Beijing censors: a native Chinese winning a top US award for film probing deep flaws in American society. Now try to imagine the reverse, a foreigner winning praise criticizing China. You can't.

The fact that many of us who wrote much about China’s censorship are surprised and puzzled by the ban on Chloe Zhao is pretty telling of how fast things are going south in China

Instead of celebrating Chloé Zhao's wins at the Oscar and making the Chinese public feeling proud, Beijing is busy censoring her -- all for a criticism she made in 2013.For as long as I've been writing about Chinese censorship and propaganda, I still can't wrap my mind around it.

So what actually caused this? I tried to dig up the reason of why she was censored but didn’t find anything deserving

All the social media posts mentioned Nomand Land (无依之地)are censored all over the internet, people are using "浪迹天地“、”有靠之天“ as alternative movie names to celebrate Chloe Zhao's historical win.

It’s always really jarring to hear US foreign policy hacks accusing China of “debt trap diplomacy”, because their beloved rules-based liberal international order is a giant machine for producing debt traps. Do they really not know the first thing about the system they champion?

This is absolutely depraved. I guess you can have some of the vaccines controlled by rich countries, but we reserve the right to strip poor nations for parts in order to maintain the global intellectual property regime. nytimes.com/2021/04/24/opi

Wow. A deep East-West difference: "人之初,性本善" 《三字经》"People at birth are inherently good." vs. “None is righteous, no, not one...All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” The Holy Bible, Romans 3:10

Chloe Zhao wins the #Oscar for best director!! She quoted the 三字经 in her acceptance speech, saying that she’s always been inspired by the phrase “人之初,性本善” to look for the good in people #Nomadland

Then you will have 70%+ Asian Americans in top universities

hot take: American universities should move to a straight-up test-scores model for admission for domestic students, with lower thresholds for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. no extracurriculars, no interviews, no admission essays
