Day of joy! Our paper is finally out where we show a way to measure olfactory bulb signal in humans using EEG electrodes. Fantastic work mostly by but also & Don Wilson. Let me break down the main findings 1/4

Have you ever heard how the smell of chocolate sounds like (if you take some artistic freedom)? If not, listen to how the human olfactory bulb process odors below (turn the sound on). As usual, thank you to and for funding different parts of this LONG project.

How does the odor of chocolate sound like? Based on our method just published in , with funding from and , we translated frequency maps from the olfactory bulb recordings in humans into the sound of neural spiking. Turn the sound on to hear!

As a bonus, I include a live-action video of us going through the obstacle course that Reviewer #4 built. We made a lot of supplementary figures for you all to enjoy🙂

The signal behaves as predicted and demonstrate a good test-retest reliability (>.78). A lot of work has gone into developing this method and I am extremely proud of the team. However, biggest thanks to ; without their support, this crazy idea would not have taken off.

The source of the odor-evoked EBG signal (in healthy individuals) was further localized to the olfactory bulb region. In a person born without bilateral olfactory bulbs, the signal is completely absent thus demonstrating that it is not due to non-odor related artifacts. 3/4

Using active electrode EEG, placed above the eyes (and lots of fancy math), we characterize the so-called electrobulbogram (EBG) that appears in the gamma band around 100-150ms after odor onset 2/4

Our new manuscript is out! Theta phase-modulated amplitude of beta and gamma oscillations in the olfactory bulb can be used to discriminate between odorants after learning but not before. All data were deposited to GigaDB!!,

Interesting extension to the idea of a cognitive fingerprint: individuals can be identified at very high accuracy based on latent patterns in their "random" number sequences
