Interesting unknown fact: this is actually the cause of most supernovas. Kardashev Type II civilization forgets to turn on time-of-use pricing and...

Folks I might have to get really into model trains now. I can’t wait for the real thing!

This is what it felt like to make solar cells in grad school. h/t

Yeah, it’s more like of a HAL 9000 pulse though. Probably half the lumens too.

This is great, thanks Jose! More evidence that First Solar is amazing... the slope of this curve is close to 1% per year, absolute!

Zoom in for few highlights: 1) Silicon seems to have reduced $/W without sacrificing efficiency. 2) In doing so, it's bypassing the predicted "Gen 2" of cheap low-efficiency solar. 3) Silicon did seem to be hit a wall in cost (2012?), and is now relying on improving efficiency.

I wanted to see how our thinking has measured up to recent trends, so I plotted some data from the "Tracking the Sun" report. They only report distributed PV systems (< 5 MW), but I imagine the trends are general (I'd love to see utility data if anyone has it).

Sit down my friends, and let me tell you a story... Many years ago I was an impressionable young grad student, and I remember seeing this chart. We often used it to justify our pitch for next generation photovoltaics. [Conibeer, G. Materials Today 2007, 10 (11), 42-50.]

One more thing. We can simplify the curves a bit by only taking the top 20 peaks from the Fourier transform. You lose some detail (especially in the weekly storage domain), but it's a bit easier to see the important bits.

You can also use this to reconstruct the time series, but for selected frequency bands. This lets you see the shape of our short-duration, long-duration, and seasonal storage needs. I'm especially interested in the "weekend dip" -- never seen that before. (I'm sure others have!)

This is kind of neat: I was wondering what the Fourier transform of electricity grid load would look like. has five years of hourly data, so here's the raw trace and the transform...
