They think prison is slavery? It is punishment for breaking the law. That is not slavery. OMG, the way you people twist situations make me ill.

Are you aware of the prison labor happening in this country? Easy example is the California wildfires being handled mostly by prisoners

$1 an Hour to Fight Largest Fire in CA History: Are Prison Firefighting Programs Slave Labor?https://www.democracynow.org/2018/8/9/1_an_hour_to_fight_largest …
-
No. They are receiving training while serving time for whatever offense landed them in prison. Perhaps some will become firefighters when they get out.
-
Actually they are not trained beyond the basics, and are not allowed to become firefighters due to their criminal record. Please check facts before responding with assumptions
-
I think that many are re-thinking about people that have served time and many will have a chance to reintegrate back into jobs and society depending upon their crime. I know many prisons that are letting prisoners attend trade schooling as part of rehabilitation. Fact.
-
Yet those prisons are not what people are against in this issue

@Ocasio2018 do you think that dangerous felons are slaves? And if so, do you also think it makes sense that striking prisoners should also be able to unionize? I think you should elaborate. -
*Some* people in prison did something morally wrong that must be repaired, but they too deserve to be treated w/ dignity & not as slaves.
#AbolishPrison & replace it w/ mediation, social services, mental healthcare. Until that happens, yes let prisoners unionize (s/o:@IWW_IWOC) -
No, prison should be a place for revenge & punishment which victims of crime deserve to have the state inflict. There is nothing to "repair" here. The idea that anyone in prison can have *dignity* is just ridiculous. The whole point of prison is to strip dignity & punish.
-
Wow, your blood-lust is just sad
(Also mildly terrifying. Legit glad we have a computer screen and many miles between us) -
No, you don't understand that the state punishes to obviate personal revenge. This is one of the valid purposes of punishment. As a libertarian, I only want the state to punish people who harm others.
-
You don't understand that this "punishment" you talk about makes people more likely to engage in more criminal behaviour. Most prisoners have committed non-violent offenses like drug possession. We need sweeping prison reform that likely involves tearing it down and starting over
-
Yes, end the war on drugs.
-
That still doesn't solve the issue of prisons being a breeding ground for increased criminality. As an example in California prisoners can work as firefighters, but then once on the outside they are barred from working in that profession.
