If you reward people for solving hard problems, some of them will *create* hard problems. Usually they don't even realize they're doing it.

  2. Our world has four distinct (but related) economies: of tangible goods and services, of financial illusions, of human attention, and of political favor. Anywhere two or more intersect, disaster follows.

  3. I understand the impulse and believe the Republicans' actions would have been deeply disturbing to the people who created the US, but this "wrap your opinion in the flag" crap is what they've been doing for decades and I don't think we should echo it.

Just a bit of swelling after a hard fall snowboarding today. No bruising, no loss of function, only slight tenderness. Hope it goes away by morning so I don't have to waste time seeing a doctor.

When everyone's remote, all share the same experience. There's no divide between the privileged in-office majority and the marginalized remote, with only the latter expected to accommodate. That makes all-remote vs. partial-remote *fundamentally* different. (3/3)

This is one reason why technical emails, code reviews, etc. often turn acrimonious. Its why I think writing is an essential technical skill, especially for those who want/need to collaborate remotely. (2/3)

Writing is like a language unto itself, separate from the spoken form. Those who are less fluent associate it with discomfort and frustration, which predisposes them toward negative statements and interpretations. (1/3)

Darcy's rule of online shopping: your order which has been delayed for a week will ship the day before you leave town so it can arrive while you're gone.

Writing is an essential skill for a senior software developer. It should be one of the *first* non-coding skills required for advancement to that level. A "senior software engineer" who never writes anything down is a fraud.

Clean code hits the real world. Every significant codebase I've worked on has stuff like this. At least in this case it's *explained* so kudos for that.

Reasonably fast machine, fast network, and still my company's main app often takes *several seconds* to unscramble itself and show content. I'll be honest, it makes me feel ashamed.

Teaching people the skills of rhetoric without also instilling in them the values of basic honesty and diligence just means the creeps and fools are harder to expose.

Yeah, it's a great idea to implement a get() method on something that's always accessed through a "smart" pointer, so that people can use both x.get() and x->get() with ubiquitous "auto" declarations obscuring the difference.

When I was a young developer, every new codebase was like a playground. I was eager to jump in, find out what wonders were there and what I could create. Now I approach every new codebase like a junkyard. Do the thing, get out. More realistic, but also kind of sad.

"100 years ago my grandfather came to this country with nothing in his pocket except holes and built a family and a business out of nothing but those holes and gumption. All the world's gumption has now been imported and no longer exists outside the U.S. We only take cash now"
