How does it help ppl to make it illegal not to have healthcare?

It helps so that after an unexpected illness you don't have a huge hospital bill to pay out of pocket.

Yes, but obviously if ppl can't afford it they are breaking the law. That's clearly dumb.

I do believe if they really couldn't afford it there were exemptions or Medicaid in some states.
