#thread Today, @SecBlinken will testify before the @HouseForeign Affairs Committee on the Biden Administration’s foreign policy priorities. One of those priorities should be ending the pandemic — which will only happen when the US commits to sharing excess vaccines globally.

No one is safe until everyone is safe. As the latest #COVID19 variants from South Africa, Brazil and the UK remind us, the longer this pandemic persists anywhere, the more likely it is that new variants will arise and extend the life of this crisis everywhere.

The @WhiteHouse just announced the US will buy 100 million more #COVID19 vaccine doses. This means the US will soon have over 550 million excess vaccine doses while billions of people in countries around the world have yet to see a single dose.https://www.one.org/us/press/biden-jj-statement/ …

The @WhiteHouse has yet to establish a clear plan for sharing excess #COVID19 vaccine doses. So far, their position has been that the US won’t share vaccines globally until most Americans receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Experts warn this stance could prolong the global pandemic.

Holding on to doses we do not need is perhaps understandable politics, but troubling policy. We’re facing one pandemic with two futures: one for wealthy countries who can afford vaccines and another for low-income countries who cannot.

Other world leaders are committing to sharing excess vaccine doses. @EmmanuelMacron has endorsed the idea of giving a share of their secured #COVID19 vaccine supplies to low-income countries through the #COVAX initiative & German Chancellor Angela Merkel has indicated interest.

While the US vacillates, adversaries are aggressively pursuing vaccine diplomacy. While low-income countries struggle to acquire #COVID19 vaccines, China has made vaccine diplomacy a top priority, pledging millions of vaccines to low-income countries.

Research shows that in a scenario where a vaccine is not distributed fairly, twice as many people could die. Moreover, another study found the global economy stands to lose as much as $9.2 trillion if governments fail to ensure developing economies can access #COVID19 vaccines.

.@SecBlinken has said, “We will not be fully secure until the world is vaccinated, not just Americans.” He's 100% right. @POTUS’ global vaccine strategy risks prolonging the pandemic. The US can help shorten it by sharing excess doses while simultaneously vaccinating Americans.
