I try to keep the lab's twitter account free from political commentary, but I'm going to make an exception for this one. For anyone outside of Australia, this is a very blunt but very informative summary of how not to lead a country in a crisis ...

Our paper "Glioblastoma cells vampirize WNT from neurons and trigger a JNK/MMP signaling loop that enhances glioblastoma progression and neurodegeneration" is finally out!🥳🥳🥳 Congratulations team! 🎉🎉🎉

I cannot believe how much money we've wasted on kits that effectively did nothing (or at least, did nothing that the bugs couldn't do all by themselves for free). It's just crazy that this has been known about for almost 30 years, yet ignored :(

Technical details ... Vector backbone: 10kb vector cut at two adjacent RE sites, treated with Antarctic phosphatase, then PCR cleanup column purified. Insert: 531bp gblock, 30bp homology at each end. DH5α were transformed directly with vector and insert mix (~1:1 equimolar)

Ok ... so we've now tried this and sequenced verified the results. It works perfectly (and at the same rate as with the NEB HiFi Assembly kit in our hands). If you're cloning with Gibson, stop adding the snake oil and try it for yourselves :)

Really glad (and very relieved) to score one of the rarest of rare beasts, an ideas grant. But at an 11% funding rate, so many great scientists missed out this year :( This is not a sustainable funding rate, Australia.

    1. These are my own personal 10 commandments of peer review: I the reviewer WILL write my review in a helpful, kind, & considerate voice. I will NOT sound angry, be snarky, make derogatory comments, be rude, be dismissive, or be condescending.

    1. I am absolutely guilty of this too but I believe that we in science tend to fetishize the suffering that can go along w/ conducing scientific research & that this can lead to tolerance of & failure to address some pretty fundamental issues in how science works.

    1. Aside from my mentors, when I was learning how to be a scientist, my science heroes, the people who inspired me the most were not a bunch of big shot Nobel prize winners but rather a group of PIs that affected me in diverse & meaningful ways. These are some of their stories.

Yet another Nobel Prize that was done without using patient material or the word "translational". Isn´t it amazing funding agencies?

Such a good illustration of why we need to play the long game in medical research and invest more in basic science ... why is this becoming harder for funding agencies to grasp?

Bioscience funding panels should more often question the uses of higher animals where fundamental concepts could be pioneered more efficiently in simpler models – thus spending research money responsibly and speeding up the discovery process.
