If you think your page count can’t possibly be less than 60, just let that script sit for two weeks. I cut nearly 10 pages out of my pilot once I looked at it with fresh eyes. some of that was making cuts in the right places so that a 1/4 page at the end of an act disappeared

I’ve worked on more than a couple things where the pilot script was over 60 but after all was cut and shot ended up being around 44-48 pages long.

Become friends with cutting shit out of your work. If you believe in it that much, save it on another document. Use it later if you want, but CUT. IT. NOW. if you don't need it.

In case you're wondering who will be playing the Gestapo in this never-ending production of the Holocaust Pt2 we're all stuck in, it's ICE.

Yup. Seeing the same thing. And when I see excess in the script, repetitions, loose scenes, etc., places I know could be cut or cut down to easily lower the page count, I know the writer doesn't have the discipline...

Nothing says “Christian” like a man who cages refugee babies attending the National Prayer Breakfast with his 3rd wife who he cheated on after divorcing his 2nd wife who he cheated on and told to have an abortion after divorcing his first wife who he cheated on and raped.

I've heard many new TV writers aren't getting much set time now and are at a loss when they do cover set. I wrote a guide to covering set for our staff writers years ago. Link here if that's helpful:

  13. a pilot is all about establishing worlds and characters in the most efficient way possible - if you need sixty five pages to do that, try to consider how much of those pages could wind up in episode 2! here endeth the lesson. (5/5)

  14. if you handed me a pilot longer than that, don’t worry, i am not grading on that, but bear this in mind, if you got a greenlight tomorrow, you’d have to cut 10 to 15 pages. most episodics and pilots are clocking in at about 50 pages or less nowadays. (4/5)

  15. tv is just a lot more cinematic than it ever was - and that needs to be reflected in your selection of story material for your pilot. the sixty plus page pilot is a relic of a time when shows were wall-to-wall dialogue with a few establishing shots in between. (3/5)

  16. part of that is that the quality of the visual image in tv has increased exponentially - action set pieces, montages, even just plain old “fancy shots” are a lot more prevalent as directors have more time and resources to do more than shoot a master and some separations... (2/5)

  17. couple of words as i settle down to read scripts for the - a lot of the scripts are way over 60 pages, some close to 70. now that’s not a deal breaker, but it’s not a good thing for me - most hour long pilots are clocking in at a LOT less nowadays (1/5)

Up-and-coming writers! Please foster a relationship with a professional BEFORE asking if they can read your script. Don’t just ask in the very first email without making any real effort to get to know the person. Earn their time and trust.
