Today, on #IWD2022, we thank all female aid workers across Afghanistan for their life-saving work despite the challenges they continue to face.
Female aid workers must be supported to access communities freely for an inclusive humanitarian response to women and girls in need.
Humanitarian needs have spiked exponentially from 6.3M people in 2019 to 28.3M people in 2023 & so did the severity. Some 6M people face emergency levels of food insecurity - a step away from famine. This is one of the world’s highest figures in absolute terms.
Amid an increasingly complex operating environment, in which Afghan women have been banned from working for national & international NGOs & the UN, funding for the #Afghanistan appeal has dried up. This comes at a time when the country is at the highest risk of famine in 25 yrs.
Women must be enabled to play a critical role in all aspects of life, including the humanitarian response. Their participation must be both respected and safeguarded. #Afghanistan
