Fair to demand accountability from former Pres of Police Commission too? 5 years ago you bemoaned extreme racial disparities that were the consequence of SFPD's tactics yet took no action on recs like these. Your inaction perpetuated them. Why? (#noexcuses)https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/04/19/traffic-enforcement-is-broken-us-heres-how-we-can-fix-it/ …

If there were more Black people in SF than 6% of the population, Loftus would be de facto banned from public office forever. https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/sanfranciscocountycalifornia …

And, in the face of long-standing inaction that has normalized the SFPD's extreme disparities, this is now.... Lotsa talk, virtually no meaningful action... STILL. Racist policing by SFPD persists because police commissioners have LET it exist.https://missionlocal.org/2021/06/community-presents-ideas-to-improve-racist-policing-police-chief-appears-distracted/ …

I’ve read years worth of SF police commission transcripts and I was convinced Loftus was a master of platitudes about liberal tolerance, but had no desire to make a more anti-racist city. But heck, she made police parades sound fun, I guess?

Disagree. Think she had/has a sincere desire to make SF more anti-racist. But, as a police comm'r, she was unwilling to take the strong steps needed to deal w/ racist policing -- driven by both explicit bias & tactics infected with implicit bias -- in face of internal opposition.

That's THE fundamental diff between her & the DA who defeated her... and whose recall she is ALREADY seeming to promote. Chesa is willing to do what's obviously needed even tho it will infuriate SFPOA. Suzy -- close to Suhr (who owed his job to SFPOA) -- wasn't until very late.

Not legal to abolish them. Their "power" is completely a function of officials refusing to say "no" to them enough. Months after publishing this, 8 of these Supes voted to give SFPOA a new contract with pay raises but no concessions at all.

Oops. 7 of those Supes, not 8. Ronen & Preston were the sole votes in Dec against giving SFPOA unconditional raises. Ronen promised leg to force transparency for negotiations with SFPOA but has since apparently dropped it. Boudin recall, in part, facilitated by supes' inaction.
