No way, the NHS is dependent on overseas workers at all levels. English should be the language when working to avoid errors but when on breaks their own language should be accepted and indeed expected.

This has been policy in both hospitals I've been in (employee & student). I think it's common

We would be keen to find out which hospitals have this policy so we can help address the issue.

Absolutely not. What if a patient and staff member share a language other than English? It could be such a comfort to hear it.

Absolutely not. It'd probably motivate me to learn a new language to practice at break times.

Absolutely not! I’ve had patients that aren’t fluent in English and understood me better in Arabic, a language we both speak, I think it’s a stupid policy tbh

Living and working in Wales, I am not welsh speaking however some of my patients are bilingual as are the staff, I have no problem with them conversing in Welsh, so why is it a problem for other languages ?

So if a Greek tourist has an accident, is a Greek
@NHSuk nurse not allowed to communicate? Is a Catholic priest not allowed to use Latin? Such Farage nonsense.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Why not get the staff to wear badges with all the languages they speak, it would be a great bonus for patients who don't have English as a first language. Speaking more languages is a bonus not something to quash.
