I don't know if they still do this, but a couple of years ago OSH Bangladesh was using this method (trawling newspapers) to estimate workplace deaths in Bangladesh. And they arrived at an estimate that was lower than Spain. So yeah, huge underestimate.

The BBC goes through obituaries, death announcements, etc. in Russia, find 25,000 war dead. This is a bare minimum. They even break them down by the phases of the war. The dead are increasingly conscripts and prisoners. bbc.co.uk/news/resources

Over four years ago published a report detailing his model of how AI will go. He imagined various specialized AI services. I think many parts of this model turned out right; but ultimately I think his model needs an update.

Ugh 😬 Looks like I'll be migrating all my domains. Thinking I'll go with Porkbun. I've used them before, I like their whole vibe. Anyone have any other registrar recommendations?

Wow: Google IS killing Google Domains; selling it to Squarespace. This is 10 million domains sold. Millions of customers like me learn again (and again!) that you cannot trust Google to keep their own products alive. Show me another vendor that throws away customers like this… twitter.com/gergelyorosz/s…

With the fate of the galaxy hanging in the balance and with premonitions that he would otherwise become a dangerous and temperamental teenager, Anakin Skywalker decided to take the Jedi Council's suggestion to go on puberty blockers.

Outside view heuristic makes more sense if you treat other people's arguments as evidence on their reasoning process, which you don't want to follow to the end bc computational constraints.

Multithreading and giving some more love to the C code gets doing a simple BOTEC down to 5 milliseconds (from, e.g., 1.5 seconds in Squiggle or 14 seconds in SquigglePy)

Added @nim_lang to <github.com/NunoSempere/ti>, which compares how fast and complex it is for me to create a simple back-of-the-envelope calculation in various languages.

I've met a few people who are spending their days and years trying to do as much good as they can. But they are also like "oh no, my abilities aren't maximally high across all dimensions. you know what that means. that means I should SUFFER".

Still thinking about how the head of the alignment team at OpenAI was like "can we take some time to think hard about whether to integrate LLMs into everything" and 6 days later OpenAI was like "we are announcing the start of integrating LLMs into everything"

Reminder to all. In a democracy, it is not the people's responsibility to trust the institutions. It is the institutions' responsibility to gain the trust of the people by being transparent and trustworthy. Be suspicious of any who suggest it's the other way around.
